How the game works
- Pick the sign the calendar gave you.
- Play eleven cards, each a small dilemma with no right answer. Your answers quietly add up to an element and a mode.
- See if you’re certified or a fake, watch your match list change, then dare your best match.

Are Aries and Leo compatible? By tradition:
Easiest
Two bonfires
Both want the front seat. The car has never been so loud.
Eleven cards. Are you even an Aries?
Trine. Four signs apart, a trine. Tradition’s easiest link: always the same element.
Fire meets fire. Huge fun, and nobody is watching the oven.
Pace. Different paces: one of you starts, the other carries on or changes course. That helps.
Where it works. Two fire signs and the book’s favorite kind of match. It’s loud, generous and impatient, and both of them mean it. They hype each other shamelessly, and they’d both rather be doing something than talking about it.
Where it rubs. Two lead roles and no understudy. Aries wants to be first, Leo wants to be adored, and both want the aux cable. When it’s good the neighbors know; when it isn’t, the neighbors also know.
In love. A big, public, slightly exhausting love. You’ll book the table with the view and argue in front of it. Compliments are currency here, so keep paying up, and remember to clap for each other’s entrances.
As friends. Two people who think a quiet night is a kind of illness. You’ll hype each other’s worst ideas and call it support. Everyone knows when you’re in the room, and most of them have a story about it.
Ask each other: Who gets the credit in your best story, and does the other agree?

Aries compatibility
Best with Leo, worst with CancerMar 21 to Apr 19. Fire sign, cardinal mode. Starts the group chat, leaves the group chat.
What Aries wants in a partner
Tradition’s Aries wants a partner who keeps up, says what they mean and enjoys a good argument without taking it home. The book’s Aries falls fast and likes to be chased back. What it needs most is someone who won’t mistake speed for carelessness, and who’s still curious after the first exciting month.
Where Aries wears people out
The trouble is the follow-through. Aries is said to start more than it finishes, to hear “let’s think about it” as “no”, and to lose interest in anything that stands still. A partner who needs long notice, slow talks or a lot of reassurance can feel left behind on the sidewalk.
Aries’s best and worst matches
The table sends Aries to the other fire signs, Leo and Sagittarius, for the shared appetite, and to Gemini and Aquarius for the ideas that keep it moving. It warns about Cancer and Capricorn, the two squares: one wants safety and the other wants a plan.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Leo: easiest
- Sagittarius: easiest
- Gemini: easy
- Aquarius: easy
- Aries: same sign
- Libra: pull of opposites
- Taurus: neutral
- Pisces: neutral
- Virgo: awkward
- Scorpio: awkward
- Cancer: hardest
- Capricorn: hardest
Aries and Aries compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: Two bonfires.
Two people reaching for the same door, at speed. Nobody has to be asked twice. Two Aries agree on the important things, which are that it should happen now and that one of them should go first. Weekends get used up completely, and a good row clears the air in four minutes flat. Both drive, nobody navigates. The book warns of two people racing to the same decision and then arguing about who got there first, and of a fire that needs a third person to fetch the water.
In love. Dates are competitive, and that is the fun of it. You’ll fall hard, say so first, and argue about who said it first. Keep something to chase together, or you’ll start chasing each other around the kitchen.
As friends. The friend you dare and the friend who dares you back. You’ll have broken something by nine and be laughing about it by ten. Nobody ever needs to be talked into anything, which is the entire problem.
Ask each other: Which of you actually started it, and do you remember what “it” was?
Aries and Taurus compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Campfire.
One says now. The other says after lunch. Lunch wins. Tradition likes the trade here: Aries supplies the shove, Taurus supplies the staying power. One gets the couch off the van, the other makes sure it ends up somewhere comfortable. Each is secretly grateful for what the other refuses to do. Neighbors on the wheel with almost nothing in common. Aries hears “later” as “never” and Taurus hears “now” as a personal attack. The sulk tends to be long, and it mostly happens during lunch.
In love. One proposes on a whim and the other reads the small print on the proposal. Aries brings the rush and Taurus the slow, solid warmth that’s still there after the rush has gone. Dinner’s how you make up.
As friends. Aries turns up unannounced and Taurus feeds them anyway. It’s a friendship of one big idea and one big lunch. You’ll drive each other mad, and you’ll both show up when somebody needs moving.
Ask each other: What’s the last thing one of you rushed and the other refused to?
Aries and Gemini compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: Wind on a flame.
Forty ideas by noon, and three of them already on fire. The book rates this an easy one: air feeds fire, so every idea Gemini has, Aries is already halfway through. It’s a fast, funny pairing that treats boredom as an emergency, and neither minds a change of plan at the door. Nobody’s minding the follow-through. Aries wants a decision, Gemini wants to discuss the decision, and a promising project can die of excitement. Someone will eventually have to read the terms and conditions.
In love. A romance conducted at a jog, with a running commentary. Texts fly, plans change and nobody gets bored. Say the serious thing out loud at least once, or you’ll both assume the other one is joking.
As friends. Your group chat has a body count. You’ll egg each other on, disagree for sport and have forgotten what about by the time the fries arrive. Neither of you has ever once left a party early.
Ask each other: What’s the best idea you two have ever had and never finished?
Aries and Cancer compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Steam.
One kicks the door in, the other brings a Band-Aid. A square, and the old books call it tense, but the trade can be sweet. Aries charges out and fights the world, and Cancer keeps a warm house to come back to. Each one defends what the other won’t. Aries says it and forgets it; Cancer files it, with the date. A careless line at breakfast can come back in six years. One wants a clean fight and the other wants an apology nobody knows they owe.
In love. Aries wants to be chased and Cancer wants to be sure. It’s a real courtship: one storms the castle, the other decides whether to lower the bridge. Once it’s down, the loyalty goes both ways and runs very deep.
As friends. Aries is the one who’ll fight your landlord. Cancer is the one who’ll bring dinner over afterwards. You’re rarely in the same mood, but neither of you would let anyone else talk about the other like that.
Ask each other: What did one of you say once that the other has never forgotten?
Aries and Leo compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: Two bonfires.
Both want the front seat. The car has never been so loud. Two fire signs and the book’s favorite kind of match. It’s loud, generous and impatient, and both of them mean it. They hype each other shamelessly, and they’d both rather be doing something than talking about it.
Aries and Virgo compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Campfire.
One breaks it, the other has already read the warranty. An awkward match on paper, a useful one in a crisis. Aries breaks through the wall, Virgo works out which wall it should have been. If they stop correcting each other, they could run a small country. Aries hears notes as criticism, Virgo hears “it’ll be fine” as a threat. One leaves the cabinet open on purpose, and the other can’t sleep. The book expects a lot of sighing near the dishwasher.
In love. It starts with an argument about directions and might end up as a very good marriage of opposites. Aries makes Virgo laugh at the plan, and Virgo makes sure there is one. Say thank you for the unglamorous stuff.
As friends. The friend who gets you into trouble and the friend who reads the terms. Virgo keeps a spare key for Aries, and a note of how many times it’s been needed. It’s an oddly dependable arrangement.
Ask each other: What’s the most annoying thing the other does right?
Aries and Libra compatibility
A pull of opposites, by tradition: Wind on a flame.
Opposites: one decides, the other asks if that was fair. Opposite ends of the wheel, the same mode, and a lot of pull. Aries decides, Libra makes the decision bearable for everyone else. Together they’re a blunt instrument wearing a very nice jacket, and tradition says that spark is the point. Aries asks what you want, Libra asks what everyone wants. One thinks tact is lying, the other thinks bluntness is rude. Restaurants become a test of character, and the waiter has seen everything.
In love. The classic pull: Aries wants you now, and Libra wants to be asked nicely. There’s a lot of chemistry in that gap. It lasts when Aries learns the word “we” and Libra learns the word “no”.
As friends. One picks the fight and the other picks up the pieces, and each gets invited everywhere because of the other. You’re a good double act at a party, as long as Libra’s doing the apologies on the way out.
Ask each other: When did one of you say the thing the other was too polite to say?
Aries and Scorpio compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Steam.
Both would win the argument. Neither will say when it ended. No shared element and no shared mode, and yet the book notes they respect each other’s nerve. Both will go all the way, and neither is frightened of a difficult conversation. Loyalty runs deep once it’s been tested, which it will be. Aries fights in the open and is finished by teatime. Scorpio doesn’t fight, and isn’t finished. Neither can lose gracefully, and the argument about who won can outlive the argument itself.
In love. Not a calm romance. It’s a test of nerve conducted over dinner, and neither of you plans to lose. If you trust each other, there’s nothing you won’t do for one another. If you don’t, keep the good plates in storage.
As friends. You’d do anything for each other, then bring it up for years. A friendship built on respect, secrets and a shared low tolerance for fools. Few people would dare sit between you at a wedding.
Ask each other: What are you each too proud to bring up first?
Aries and Sagittarius compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: Two bonfires.
Passports out. Nobody checked where this train goes. Fire with fire, a trine, and the easiest kind of link in the book. Both think a plan is a suggestion and a suggestion is a dare. Trips happen on a Tuesday, and each of them is the other’s favorite bad influence. Nobody’s home to feed the cat. The honesty runs hot on both sides, and a joke can land like a slap. Neither will remember the booking, the passports or the name of the hotel.
In love. Love as a road trip with no map. It’s funny, always moving and light on heavy talks. Stop once a year to ask where you’re going, and whether you’re going there together.
As friends. The two friends who said “one drink” and are now in another city. You’ll never run out of stories, and most of them can’t be told in front of your parents. Bring a charger.
Ask each other: Where would you go tomorrow if neither of you checked anything first?
Aries and Capricorn compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Campfire.
One sprints, one has a ten-year plan, both hate losing. A square, but both are cardinal signs and both want to win. Aries brings the sprint and Capricorn the map, and if they aim at the same mountain they’re alarmingly effective. Respect is earned by getting things done. Aries can’t wait and Capricorn won’t be hurried. One sees a business plan as a cage, and the other sees impulse as an expense. Whoever’s in charge will hear about it from the other one.
In love. A power couple or a very long stand-off. Aries needs passion and Capricorn shows it through results. Each secretly likes that the other can’t be pushed around. Make time for something that doesn’t go on a CV.
As friends. You met competing and stayed friends out of respect. Capricorn gets Aries a job and Aries gets Capricorn out of the office. Each thinks the other could be great, if only they’d listen.
Ask each other: Who’s really the boss here, and who only thinks they are?
Aries and Aquarius compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: Wind on a flame.
One starts the riot, the other wrote the leaflet. Air on fire, an easy sextile, and a shared allergy to being told what to do. Aries starts things, Aquarius explains why they matter. Together they’re the two people at the meeting who’ve already left to do it their way. Aries takes things personally; Aquarius takes nothing personally, which Aries takes personally. One wants heat, the other wants a good debate from a safe distance, and an argument can turn into a seminar.
In love. A slightly unusual love with plenty of room in it. Neither needs constant company, and both enjoy a cause. Aries will want more heat than Aquarius tends to offer, so say so instead of slamming the cabinet.
As friends. Partners in mischief with a mission statement. You’ve started at least one thing that got banned. Aries does the shouting, Aquarius does the leaflets, and neither ever asks the other for permission.
Ask each other: What rule have you both always ignored, and why?
Aries and Pisces compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Steam.
One charges in, the other saw how this ends and came anyway. Neighbors on the wheel with very little in common, which can be a mercy. Aries gives Pisces a push out the door. Pisces shows Aries that not everything needs defeating. Each one finds the other faintly magical. Aries says what it means at once, and Pisces says what it means in a poem three days later. One can bruise without noticing and the other can vanish without saying why. Directions are, at best, a shared guess.
In love. Aries rescues and Pisces inspires, and both are charmed for a good long while. Tenderness is the surprise here. Keep it by going gently with the truth, and by not disappearing when it’s too much.
As friends. Aries is the one who gets Pisces off the couch. Pisces is the one who asks Aries how they really are. It isn’t an obvious friendship, and both will say it’s been one of their kindest.
Ask each other: When did one of you notice something the other hadn’t said out loud?
Taurus compatibility
Best with Virgo, worst with LeoApr 20 to May 20. Earth sign, fixed mode. Will wait for the good bread.
What Taurus wants in a partner
Tradition’s Taurus wants someone who shows up. It’s the sign of the good dinner and the long lease, and the book says it reads love as things done: the car filled up, the favorite snack remembered. It needs a partner who’s steady, physically affectionate and in no hurry at all.
Where Taurus wears people out
Where it wears people out is the refusal to move. Taurus is said to dig in on small things and big things with equal calm, and to treat a change of plan as a personal attack. Partners who like surprises may come to feel they’re dating a very comfortable wall.
Taurus’s best and worst matches
The table likes Virgo and Capricorn best, the other earth signs, who share the taste for things that last, then Cancer and Pisces for warmth. Its two squares are Leo and Aquarius, fixed signs that won’t budge either.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Virgo: easiest
- Capricorn: easiest
- Cancer: easy
- Pisces: easy
- Taurus: same sign
- Scorpio: pull of opposites
- Gemini: neutral
- Aries: neutral
- Libra: awkward
- Sagittarius: awkward
- Leo: hardest
- Aquarius: hardest
Taurus and Taurus compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: Two gardeners.
The same couch, the same order, the best lives of anyone. Tradition’s idea of contentment: two people, one excellent couch, no sudden moves. They agree on food, comfort and the correct way to do most things. Loyalty is assumed, and nobody needs a surprise party, thank you. Two fixed signs in a standoff can last a decade. Neither will change the routine, the thermostat or their mind. The book warns of a very comfortable rut with a very nice view of the same wall.
In love. Slow, sensible, deeply fond. You court each other with food and you’ll be holding hands in the same chairs in forty years. Try somewhere new about once a decade, purely to check it’s still inferior.
As friends. The friend whose kitchen you’ve been in for twenty years. You don’t need to speak, you need to eat. Neither of you has ever canceled, and neither has ever suggested anything new.
Ask each other: What’s the one household thing neither of you will ever back down on?
Taurus and Gemini compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Kite and string.
One wants dinner. The other wants to talk about dinner. Next-door signs that fill each other’s gaps. Gemini keeps Taurus entertained, and Taurus keeps Gemini fed. One gets out of the house more than expected; the other finally finishes a meal without checking a phone. Taurus wants to know the plan and Gemini has eleven. One values what lasts, and the other gets restless by the second course. Gemini’s favorite thing is a change of subject, and Taurus was still on the first one.
In love. Gemini flirts with everyone, Taurus with one person, for life. There’s real sweetness if Gemini stays for dessert. Taurus should leave a little room to breathe, and Gemini should mean it when they say “home”.
As friends. Taurus is the steady friend Gemini calls from the wrong city. Gemini is why Taurus has heard of anything. It’s a long, easy friendship, as long as the plan’s confirmed in writing, twice.
Ask each other: What do you each do when the other’s being “too much”?
Taurus and Cancer compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: A good garden.
A full fridge, a warm house, and nobody is leaving. Earth and water, a sextile, the book’s “good garden”. Both want a home that smells of something in the oven and people who stay. It’s a quietly devoted match, built on feeding each other and remembering how you take your coffee. Nobody wants to be the one to raise it. Taurus goes quiet out of stubbornness and Cancer goes quiet out of hurt, and the two silences can sit at dinner for a week. Leaving the house is a negotiation.
In love. A love that smells of toast. You remember anniversaries, you save the last bit for each other and you’re in by ten. It’s hard to think of a more cared-for pair of people, or a fuller freezer.
As friends. The friends who still send birthday cards by mail. You’d drive three hours with soup. If you stopped speaking, it’d be for about a day and a half, and nobody would mention it again.
Ask each other: What’s your idea of being looked after, in one small detail?
Taurus and Leo compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Campfire.
Two fixed signs in one doorway. Bring a chair. A square between two fixed signs, and yet they share a love of the good stuff. Leo brings the party and Taurus brings the catering. When they’re on the same side, it’s the most comfortable and best-dressed household on the street. Two signs that do not move. Leo wants admiration and Taurus wants to be left alone with its dinner. One spends and the other saves, and a disagreement can harden into a piece of furniture.
In love. Both are loyal, both like luxury, and neither will ever concede the thermostat. It works when Taurus admires out loud and Leo stays home occasionally. A long, proud, well-fed love, with some very long silences.
As friends. Leo’s the one in the good coat, and Taurus knows where the good food is. You’ll disagree loudly about where to go, then both refuse to leave once you’re there. Solid for decades.
Ask each other: What have you each refused to back down on for far too long?
Taurus and Virgo compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: Two gardeners.
The trash is out. The garden has a spreadsheet. Bliss. Earth with earth, a trine, the book’s model of a calm life. The bills are paid, the fridge is planned, and both show love by doing something useful. Few pairs get more pleasure from a well-stocked pantry. Virgo improves things that Taurus already considered finished. It can settle into a very tidy routine where nothing is ever said out loud. The risk isn’t fights; it’s two people politely reorganizing around a problem.
In love. A courtship of small, correct gestures: the car’s been filled up, the good pen’s been found. It’s quietly romantic in a way only the two of you will notice. Add one extravagance a year, for the look of the thing.
As friends. You’re each other’s most trusted second opinion. Nobody gives better advice about a boiler, and nobody remembers your order better. A friendship with very few dramas and a lot of shared Tupperware.
Ask each other: What’s the most romantic boring thing one of you has done?
Taurus and Libra compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Kite and string.
Two lovers of nice things, and one very full basket. An awkward angle, but the old books give them a shared ruler in Venus, so both like beautiful things and a peaceful house. They’ll agree on the curtains and the wine, and they’ll both go a long way to avoid a scene. Libra needs people and Taurus needs the couch. One sees both sides for hours and the other chose in 2014. The basket fills faster than either expected, and neither is keen to discuss who’s putting it back.
In love. The old books give you the same patron, Venus, so you both know how to do romance properly. Flowers will be involved. Libra needs conversation and Taurus needs quiet, so take it in turns to choose the evening.
As friends. The two who always know the nice place. You’ll spend a whole afternoon on a very good lunch and call it catching up. Libra brings the gossip, Taurus brings the patience to hear all of it.
Ask each other: What’s the nicest thing you’ve ever bought that you didn’t need?
Taurus and Scorpio compatibility
A pull of opposites, by tradition: A good garden.
Opposites, and neither has backed down since 2017. Opposites on the wheel, and both fixed, so tradition expects a deep and stubborn loyalty. Taurus offers safety and Scorpio offers depth. They both know how to stay, and few things are more devoted than two people who simply won’t leave. Neither has ever apologized first. Taurus digs in and Scorpio plots, and the sulk can reach historic length. Possessiveness comes as standard on both sides, so it’s worth saying what’s fine out loud.
In love. Devotion with a jealous streak. Once you’ve chosen each other, the matter’s closed and the door’s bolted. You’ll be very happy and very hard to reach. Say “I trust you” more often than you check.
As friends. You’d keep each other’s secrets past the grave, and hold a grudge on the other’s behalf for just as long. You’ve been friends since before anyone can remember, and you can’t quite recall who was wrong.
Ask each other: What’s the longest you’ve each held out in an argument?
Taurus and Sagittarius compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Campfire.
One bought the house, the other bought a one-way ticket. An awkward pairing with one real gift: each has what the other lacks. Sagittarius drags Taurus to places with no menu in English. Taurus makes sure there’s a home, and a good dinner, to come back to. One wants roots, the other wants a window seat. Taurus keeps the receipts and Sagittarius lost them in another country. An honest joke about the waistline or the savings won’t land the way it was meant.
In love. A romance between a house and a suitcase. It’s funny and it’s hard work. Sagittarius needs to come back, Taurus needs to let them go, and both need to agree which of those is happening this month.
As friends. Sagittarius sends postcards and Taurus keeps them in a box. You’ll go a year without talking, then pick up as if nothing’s happened. Taurus drives to the airport. Sagittarius brings a strange cheese.
Ask each other: If you had to swap lives for a week, who’d crack first?
Taurus and Capricorn compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: Two gardeners.
Two quiet people slowly owning the whole street. Earth with earth, and the book’s long game. Both think in decades, both love a solid plan, and neither needs a fuss. They’ll quietly build something very sturdy, then treat themselves to one extremely good dinner. All work and a nice view of the work. Neither is quick to say the soft thing out loud. Capricorn may forget to stop, and Taurus may refuse to start, and the romance can get filed under “later”.
In love. Two adults, in the old sense. You’ll talk about mortgages on date night and enjoy it. Love shows up as the house being warm when they get home. Don’t forget to say so as well, in words.
As friends. The friend you’d call for sensible advice and a straight answer. You’ve been quietly doing well alongside each other for years, and you celebrate with one good bottle and no speeches.
Ask each other: What are you two quietly building, and when do you get to enjoy it?
Taurus and Aquarius compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Kite and string.
Neither will move, and one calls it a principle. A square between two fixed signs: the book’s immovable object and its other immovable object. But Aquarius gets Taurus to look up, and Taurus gets Aquarius to eat something. There’s real affection under the eye-rolling. Aquarius wants to change the system and Taurus likes the system. One calls it a principle and the other calls it Tuesday. Neither will move, and each privately thinks the other is the stubborn one.
In love. Two very fixed people with very different ideas of home. It takes real curiosity to work, and it can: Taurus keeps Aquarius grounded, Aquarius keeps Taurus surprised. Pick your battles, because you’ll both be there all night.
As friends. A friendship that runs on friendly bafflement. Taurus thinks the commune sounds cold, Aquarius thinks the couch is a trap, and you’ve been having that exact conversation for years with great enjoyment.
Ask each other: What’s the hill you’ve each decided to die on at home?
Taurus and Pisces compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: A good garden.
One makes soup, the other cries into it, gratefully. Earth and water, a sextile and an easy one. Taurus gives Pisces ground to stand on, and Pisces gives Taurus a reason to look up from the plate. It’s gentle and affectionate, and nobody’s in a hurry. Pisces drifts and Taurus waits, and sometimes neither mentions it. One needs a plan with a time on it, and the other is unsure what day it is. The comfort can turn into hiding, together, with snacks.
In love. Soft, romantic and in no hurry. Taurus runs the bath, Pisces writes the note. It’s the love song version of a Sunday. Just make sure one of you occasionally opens the mail.
As friends. Pisces cries, Taurus passes the cookies, and nobody needs an explanation. It’s among the most restful friendships there is. You can spend a whole day together and achieve absolutely nothing.
Ask each other: What’s something you only do because the other one makes it nice?
Gemini compatibility
Best with Libra, worst with VirgoMay 21 to Jun 20. Air sign, mutable mode. Has three tabs open in every conversation.
What Gemini wants in a partner
Tradition’s Gemini wants conversation first and everything else second. It falls for a quick mind, a good story and anyone who can change the subject without warning. What it needs is a partner who stays interesting, leaves room and doesn’t ask it to pick one mood forever.
Where Gemini wears people out
The book’s complaint is follow-through and depth. Gemini is said to answer a serious question with a joke, keep several plans open at once, and go quiet exactly when someone wants a straight answer. A partner who needs certainty can end up doing all the emotional paperwork alone.
Gemini’s best and worst matches
The table pairs Gemini with Libra and Aquarius, fellow air signs who enjoy the talking, then Aries and Leo for the energy. Its squares are Virgo, who wants the details, and Pisces, who wants the feelings.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Libra: easiest
- Aquarius: easiest
- Leo: easy
- Aries: easy
- Gemini: same sign
- Sagittarius: pull of opposites
- Cancer: neutral
- Taurus: neutral
- Scorpio: awkward
- Capricorn: awkward
- Virgo: hardest
- Pisces: hardest
Gemini and Gemini compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: All talk.
Four people in this conversation, and only two of you. Same sign, same speed. Conversation never runs out, jokes come in layers, and neither minds a plan changing four times. Tradition says they’re less a couple than a very good podcast nobody else can follow. Nobody’s holding the thread. Both avoid the heavy subject by being funny about it. Bills, dates and feelings can all slip behind a tab that nobody’s opened for months.
In love. Falling in love by talking until it’s light. You’ll know each other’s jokes before you know each other’s surname. Choose something to be serious about together, or the whole thing may stay a very good conversation.
As friends. You have your own language and at least four abandoned podcasts. Nobody else can follow your group chat. You’re the two people everyone wants at their table, and nobody wants on their committee.
Ask each other: What’s the serious thing you always manage to joke your way around?
Gemini and Cancer compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Weather.
One said it as a joke. The other kept it for a decade. Neighbors with different languages. Gemini lightens the mood when Cancer’s in deep, and Cancer gives Gemini somewhere worth coming home to. When it works, one makes the other laugh and the other makes them stay. Gemini said it as a joke; Cancer took it to heart and kept it. One needs reassurance, the other has wandered off mid-sentence. Tradition warns that a text left unanswered will be read as a statement.
In love. Gemini teases and Cancer has to decide if it’s love. Mostly it is. It works when Gemini stays for the hard conversation, and Cancer says what’s wrong before the third day of being quiet.
As friends. Gemini’s the one who brings the news and Cancer’s the one who remembers how you took it. You’re each other’s favorite person to complain to, if you’re careful about who hears it next.
Ask each other: What’s one joke that went further than it was meant to?
Gemini and Leo compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: Wind on a flame.
One writes the speech, the other takes the bow. Air on fire, an easy sextile, and a natural double act. Gemini writes the lines, Leo delivers them to the back row. They’re great at parties, and even better in the car home discussing everyone at the party. Leo wants all of your attention and Gemini has about a third available. One wants a compliment that means it, the other offers a clever one instead. The bill for the fun may arrive later.
In love. Plenty of flirting, plenty of audience. Gemini keeps Leo amused, and Leo makes Gemini feel chosen. Just be sure the compliments are real, because Leo checks, and don’t put Gemini on a very short lead.
As friends. The best double act at the wedding. You’ve shut down a dance floor and made a stranger cry laughing. Gemini knows everyone’s business, Leo knows everyone’s name, and between you nobody’s safe.
Ask each other: Who’s the talker and who’s the star, and did you ever agree that?
Gemini and Virgo compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Kite and string.
Two brains, one kitchen table, nine unfinished lists. A square, and both are mutable signs with quick minds, so tradition says they’ll out-think each other happily. They share lists, books and a dry sense of humor. Few pairs can have a better time arguing over nothing. Gemini has moved on and Virgo is still fact-checking. One leaves a trail of half-finished things and the other follows it, tutting. Criticism can pass for conversation until someone stops laughing.
In love. Two clever people flirting by correcting each other. It’s a real meeting of minds, and it’s sharper than it looks. Be kind with it: a point scored at dinner can be remembered much longer than the dinner.
As friends. You’ll never finish the crossword, because you’re arguing about the clue. Virgo keeps Gemini’s dates straight, and Gemini keeps Virgo from staying in. A very long-running, very pedantic friendship.
Ask each other: What’s the pettiest thing you’ve ever both enjoyed arguing about?
Gemini and Libra compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: All talk.
You could discuss this all night, and you will. Air with air, a trine, and the easiest talk in the book. Both love people, ideas and a good evening out. They can discuss anything all night, and they’ll usually agree the other person made an excellent point. Lovely talk, no decision. Neither wants to be the one to book it, say it or end it. The book warns of a long friendly hesitation where a difficult choice should be.
In love. A romance of long dinners and very good manners. You’re delighted by each other and it shows. Someone will have to ask where this is going, and you’ll both be charming about avoiding the question.
As friends. Everyone’s favorite pair. You know the same people and you see both sides of every story. It’s no bad thing, unless someone needs you to take one, in which case you’ll send a lovely card.
Ask each other: What decision are you two politely avoiding right now?
Gemini and Scorpio compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Weather.
One asks everything. The other answers nothing. An awkward pair and a fascinating one. Gemini asks all the questions and Scorpio finally has someone worth not answering. Each is the other’s favorite puzzle, and it’s rarely dull. Gemini tells everyone and Scorpio tells no one. A harmless bit of gossip can look like betrayal, and a silence can look like a threat. Trust is the whole game here, and it’s slow.
In love. A slow seduction by question. Gemini wants to know everything, and Scorpio decides what to reveal. If trust takes hold, each finds what they were missing. If it doesn’t, one of you will read the other’s messages.
As friends. The friend who tells you everything and the friend who tells you nothing. You’re oddly good for each other, as long as Gemini accepts that some things Scorpio says are strictly not for the group.
Ask each other: What’s something you’d tell the other that you wouldn’t tell anyone else?
Gemini and Sagittarius compatibility
A pull of opposites, by tradition: Wind on a flame.
Opposites: the map, the rumour, and no hotel. Opposites on the wheel, both mutable, and tradition says they’re two halves of one conversation. Gemini knows a bit of everything, Sagittarius believes a lot of it. Together they’re excellent company and appalling at timekeeping. Plans evaporate. Both are allergic to the boring bit, so the boring bit doesn’t happen. Sagittarius’s bluntness meets Gemini’s changing story, and neither will admit to having got lost.
In love. A pull between two restless people who won’t tie each other down. It’s all travel, debate and laughter, and it’s light on Sundays. Decide what you’re staying for, or one of you will wander off mid-sentence.
As friends. Two people who can talk to anyone, about anything, at any airport. You’re an excellent bad influence on each other. Neither has ever read the itinerary, and the stories are better for it.
Ask each other: Who’s the worse travel companion, and what’s the evidence?
Gemini and Capricorn compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Kite and string.
One has a new idea. The other has a follow-up meeting. An awkward match that works best as a partnership. Gemini has the ideas and the contacts, and Capricorn turns them into something with a date on it. Each thinks the other is slightly ridiculous, and each is useful. Capricorn wants a follow-up and Gemini wants a new topic. One reads flexibility as unreliability, and the other reads a plan as a prison. Work can quietly replace fun if nobody says anything.
In love. It’s a surprise that this works, and sometimes it does. Gemini loosens the tie and Capricorn gives the butterfly somewhere to land. Respect each other’s pace, and take turns picking who’s in charge of Saturday.
As friends. Capricorn is the friend who tells Gemini to send the invoice. Gemini is the friend who gets Capricorn to the party. Each privately thinks the other could do with a bit more of what they’ve got.
Ask each other: What’s one thing you’d get done only because the other nagged?
Gemini and Aquarius compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: All talk.
The group chat, but just the two of you, forever. Air with air, a trine, and friends first, whatever else they are. They talk in ideas, love odd people and never run out of things to wonder about. The book thinks this could be the best conversation of your life. All head, slightly less heart. Both can step back from a feeling and discuss it as if it belonged to someone else. It’s easy to spend years being fascinated and never quite get around to being close.
In love. It feels like talking to yourself, only with better material. It’s a light, clever, roomy love, and neither of you will ever suffocate. Now and then, stop being interesting and say something plain and sincere.
As friends. The friendship everyone else wishes they were in. You have theories about people, and you’ve tested them. You could start a band, a school or a very small country, and you’ve probably discussed which.
Ask each other: What’s something you actually feel about this that you’ve only ever discussed?
Gemini and Pisces compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Weather.
One changes the subject, the other changes the mood. A square of two mutable signs, and neither is holding anything down. Together they make up stories, change their minds and find life very funny or very sad, sometimes by the same lunchtime. It’s rarely a dull house. Gemini changes the subject and Pisces changes the mood, and nobody knows what was agreed. One wants the facts and the other wants the feeling. Promises can dissolve with no one quite to blame.
In love. A romance of moods and messages. You’re both changeable, so it’s rarely the same relationship twice. Lovely when it’s light. Find one thing you can both rely on, even if it’s only Sunday breakfast.
As friends. You’ll be laughing, then crying, then forgetting what about. Gemini cheers Pisces up, and Pisces lets Gemini be sad, which not many people do. Neither of you can say what time you agreed to meet.
Ask each other: Which of you remembers what you actually agreed last time?
Cancer compatibility
Best with Scorpio, worst with LibraJun 21 to Jul 22. Water sign, cardinal mode. Remembers what you said in 2019.
What Cancer wants in a partner
Tradition’s Cancer wants home, wherever that happens to be. The book’s crab loves slowly, remembers everything and shows it by feeding people. What it needs is a partner who’ll be gentle with the soft part, come back after an argument and treat family as more than a calendar obligation.
Where Cancer wears people out
Where it wears people out is the shell. Cancer is said to go silent rather than say what’s wrong, to keep a detailed record of old hurts, and to test people without telling them there’s a test. A breezier partner may never learn why dinner went cold.
Cancer’s best and worst matches
The table sends Cancer to Scorpio and Pisces, the other water signs, who speak the same silent language, then to Taurus and Virgo for steadiness. Its squares are Aries and Libra: too blunt on one side, too breezy on the other.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Scorpio: easiest
- Pisces: easiest
- Virgo: easy
- Taurus: easy
- Cancer: same sign
- Capricorn: pull of opposites
- Leo: neutral
- Gemini: neutral
- Sagittarius: awkward
- Aquarius: awkward
- Libra: hardest
- Aries: hardest
Cancer and Cancer compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: The deep end.
Both remember the anniversary. Both remember the other thing. Same sign, same soft shell. Each knows exactly what the other needs, and neither has to explain. Home matters, family matters, and tradition says nobody on earth will look after you better. Two moods on one tide. Both wait to be asked, both remember everything, and both go sideways when hurt. The book warns against keeping score, because you’ll both have kept it perfectly.
In love. You’ll build a nest, and you’ll fill it with people and photographs. Few loves are this tender. Take turns being the one who’s all right, because two crabs in retreat is a very quiet house.
As friends. The friend who remembers your mom’s birthday. You’ve held each other’s hair and each other’s secrets, and you’re both still upset about what she said in 2011. Nobody’s getting between you.
Ask each other: What’s something you’ve been waiting for the other to notice?
Cancer and Leo compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Steam.
One feeds everybody, the other tells them who to thank. Neighbors, and an unexpectedly warm pair. Cancer cares for people, Leo makes them feel like stars, and between them everyone’s fed and everyone’s fussed over. Few households are so proud of each other. Leo needs an audience and Cancer needs privacy. One airs it in public and the other is mortified. Hurt pride meets hurt feelings, and the two can each wait a long time to be comforted first.
In love. Leo makes a grand gesture and Cancer keeps the ticket stub forever. It’s very warm. Leo should notice the small things, and Cancer should applaud the big ones, even when they’re a bit much.
As friends. Leo gets you out the door, Cancer gets you home again. You’re the hosts everyone wants: one cooks, one performs, and both ask after your family. Don’t let anyone sit in Leo’s seat.
Ask each other: Who needs more looking after, and do they admit it?
Cancer and Virgo compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: A good garden.
Someone always brought a sweater. It’s both of you. Water and earth, a sextile, and tradition’s quiet helpers. Cancer feels what’s needed and Virgo does it. They show love through soup, lifts to the airport and remembering what you’re allergic to. Virgo fixes when Cancer wants to be heard. Worry can feed on worry, and a kind suggestion may land as criticism. Both may be so busy looking after the other that neither asks for anything.
In love. A careful, kind love with a lot of checking in. You’ll remember each other’s appointments and worry about the same draught. It’s not fireworks. It’s the person who noticed you’d gone quiet and came and sat down.
As friends. The friend who turns up with a casserole and a list of questions for the doctor’s receptionist. You’ve each saved the other a few times, and neither wants any fuss made about it.
Ask each other: When you’re upset, do you want it fixed or do you want a hug?
Cancer and Libra compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Weather.
Both start things, both say it’s fine, neither means it. A square of two cardinal signs, and both want everyone to be all right. Libra smooths the room, Cancer warms it. They’re a gracious pair at any table, and very good to their friends. Both say “it’s fine”. Neither means it. Libra avoids the scene and Cancer sulks, and the thing that’s wrong can live in the house for months, like a third roommate.
In love. A sweet, polite love with something unsaid in it. Libra wants harmony and Cancer wants closeness, and those aren’t quite the same. Risk the small argument, because it costs less than the long silence.
As friends. You remember each other’s favorite everything, and neither would ever be rude about it. You’d just quietly stop inviting someone. You’re the kindest pair anyone knows, and possibly the most terrifying.
Ask each other: What’s the last time you said “it’s fine” and it wasn’t?
Cancer and Scorpio compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: The deep end.
Nobody says anything. Everybody knows everything. Water with water, a trine, and the book’s deep end. Each understands loyalty, memory and how to say nothing meaningfully. Few matches are as intense, or feel as safe once the door is shut. Nobody forgets, and nobody says. Hurt goes underground, and it comes back up at Christmas. Jealousy gets a warm welcome from both sides, and a shared silence can get very heavy.
In love. Intense, private and very long-lasting. You understand each other without a word, which is lovely until nobody’s saying a word. It’s a love that’ll stand by you through anything, and know what you did.
As friends. The friendship that’s basically a secret society. You know where everything’s buried, because you helped. Your loyalty’s total, and your opinion of everyone else is rarely said aloud, except to each other.
Ask each other: What’s the thing you know about each other that nobody else does?
Cancer and Sagittarius compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Steam.
One packs the snacks, the other already left. An awkward match, and tradition is doubtful, but they can teach each other plenty. Sagittarius brings air and laughter into a closed house. Cancer gives a wanderer a reason to send a postcard. One packs the snacks, the other already left. Sagittarius tells the plain truth; Cancer hears a verdict. Freedom and closeness are both reasonable things to want, and they’ll need to take turns.
In love. A love between a porch light and a horizon. It can work if Sagittarius really does come back, and Cancer really does let them leave. Send the postcard. Leave the light on. Agree on what “soon” means.
As friends. Sagittarius gets Cancer on a plane, once, and Cancer has never stopped talking about it. Sagittarius keeps coming back for the cooking. It’s a friendship of opposites, and it’s kinder than it looks.
Ask each other: How much time apart is right for you, honestly?
Cancer and Capricorn compatibility
A pull of opposites, by tradition: A good garden.
Opposites: home and office, each saving the other a seat. Opposites, both cardinal, and tradition says they’re two halves of a household. Capricorn looks after the outside world and Cancer looks after the inside one. Between them, nobody in the family will ever be short of anything. One says “I’m working for us”; the other says “you’re never here”. Capricorn can miss the feeling under the complaint. Cancer can miss the love inside the spreadsheet. Both are, in their way, saying the same thing.
In love. A traditional sort of love: one keeps the home, the other keeps the roof on it, and it doesn’t matter which is which. Duty runs deep here. Don’t let it take the place of a hand on the shoulder.
As friends. Two people who take care of everybody, and then take care of each other in private, once a year, over a very long lunch. You’d each trust the other with your children and your passwords.
Ask each other: How does each of you show love without saying it?
Cancer and Aquarius compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Weather.
One needs a hug, the other sends an interesting article. An awkward angle between a very private sign and a very public-spirited one. Aquarius gives Cancer a wider world, and Cancer gives Aquarius a home. If it works, it works because it surprises everyone, them included. One needs a hug, the other sends an interesting article. Cancer wants to be someone’s person, and Aquarius wants to be everyone’s friend. A cool head at the wrong moment can feel like a shut door.
In love. Not the easiest love to explain. Cancer wants the two of you, and Aquarius wants the two of you plus the whole of society. It lasts if Aquarius learns to stay in the room when someone’s crying.
As friends. An unexpected friendship. Aquarius brings odd new ideas and Cancer brings them back down to whether you’ve eaten. Each has told the other things they haven’t told anyone who’d be more likely to understand.
Ask each other: What do you need when you’re sad, and have you ever said so?
Cancer and Pisces compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: The deep end.
Two people apologizing for the same rain. Water with water, a trine, and tradition’s softest match. They feel the same weather, finish each other’s sighs and forgive quickly. Home is a place with blankets, and nobody’s asked to explain themselves. Both are awash, and nobody’s bailing. A bad mood can pass back and forth for days. Practical matters get left until someone, usually neither of them, opens the envelope.
In love. A love that reads your mood from across the room. You’ll be tender, forgiving and slightly cut off from the outside world. It’s lovely in there. Open the curtains sometimes, and pay the gas bill.
As friends. You can cry on the phone and nobody asks why. You’ve both been through a lot, and you’ve both brought tissues. This is the friend who still replies at 2 am and means every word of it.
Ask each other: Who’s the one who says “right, we need to deal with this”?
Leo compatibility
Best with Sagittarius, worst with ScorpioJul 23 to Aug 22. Fire sign, fixed mode. Knows their good side, and it’s all of them.
What Leo wants in a partner
Tradition’s Leo wants to be adored, and it’s generous about returning the favor. The book’s lion is loyal, warm and theatrical, and it needs a partner who’s proud to be seen with it, says the compliment out loud and turns up for the big occasions.
Where Leo wears people out
The trouble is the spotlight, which doesn’t rotate easily. Leo is said to take a lack of applause personally, to hate being laughed at and to find it hard to back down in front of people. Quiet partners can feel like the audience in their own relationship.
Leo’s best and worst matches
The table likes Aries and Sagittarius best, fellow fire signs who enjoy a big life, then Gemini and Libra for the sparkle. Its squares are Taurus and Scorpio, two fixed signs just as unwilling to go first.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Sagittarius: easiest
- Aries: easiest
- Libra: easy
- Gemini: easy
- Leo: same sign
- Aquarius: pull of opposites
- Virgo: neutral
- Cancer: neutral
- Capricorn: awkward
- Pisces: awkward
- Scorpio: hardest
- Taurus: hardest
Leo and Leo compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: Two bonfires.
One stage, two stars, and a very tired audience. Same sign, same spotlight. Two big hearts who understand each other’s need to be told they’re wonderful, and who will gladly tell each other. Few couples have better photographs. One stage, two stars. Each is waiting to be admired first, and a wounded Leo is a lot; two is a production. The audience, which is everyone you know, gets tired before you do.
In love. Two people who want to be adored, and who, handily, adore. You’ll look wonderful, and you’ll have some truly operatic evenings. Take it in turns to be the sun. There’s more than enough warmth to go around.
As friends. The friend who’ll tell you you’re the best, and expects the same in return. You’re each other’s loudest fan and fiercest rival. Group photos take a while, and you’ve both checked your angle.
Ask each other: Who gets the last word at a party, and how do they get it?
Leo and Virgo compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Campfire.
One’s the show, the other fixed the lights and won’t mention it. Neighbors, and an odd, useful team. Leo’s the show, Virgo makes sure the show happens. One gets the other out of the spreadsheet, and the other stops the first from spending it all on a cape. Leo wants praise; Virgo offers notes. Even a helpful comment can sound like a bad review. One wants to be adored as is, and the other loves by improving things.
In love. A slightly unusual love, with lots of quiet care behind the curtain. Leo gets looked after, and Virgo gets taken out of itself. It’s at its best when Leo notices the effort and Virgo lets the compliment land.
As friends. Leo gives the toast and Virgo checked the spelling. You’re a good team for a wedding, a fundraiser or a small coup. Each secretly feels the other is the one who keeps everything going.
Ask each other: What’s the nicest thing you’ve never said to each other?
Leo and Libra compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: Wind on a flame.
The best-dressed table, and everyone is looking at it. Fire and air, a sextile, and the best-dressed table in the room. Both love company, charm and being seen somewhere nice. The book sees a warm, sociable pair who really like each other’s friends. Lots of style, slightly less plumbing. Leo’s pride and Libra’s tact can leave the real talk unsaid. The calendar’s full, the bank’s surprised, and someone will need to say no to something.
In love. A very pretty love, and everybody says so. You like being seen together, and you’re both good at making the other feel special. Make room for the unglamorous days, because they’ll come whether you’ve dressed for them or not.
As friends. The most fun table in any restaurant. Libra knows how to get a seat and Leo knows how to keep it. You share clothes, opinions and a very low opinion of whoever chose this music.
Ask each other: What are you two best at doing together in public?
Leo and Scorpio compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Steam.
Neither blinks. The room takes sides. A square of two fixed signs, and neither blinks. Both are fiercely loyal, both are all-or-nothing, and both are very hard to ignore. When they’re on the same side, the room had better watch out. Leo shows everything and Scorpio shows nothing. Pride meets control, and a standoff may be settled by whoever dies first. Each wants total devotion, and each is checking.
In love. A love that’s a bit like a chess match with candles. Both are magnetic, and both are possessive. If you can give each other complete trust, it’s a great romance. If you can’t, it’s great theater.
As friends. You don’t become friends quickly, and you don’t stop. Neither will ever give an inch, and each one would quietly ruin anyone who hurt the other. Everyone’s a little afraid of you when you’re together.
Ask each other: What’s the most dramatic thing either of you has done for love?
Leo and Sagittarius compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: Two bonfires.
Big laughs, big plans, and the neighbors know both. Fire with fire, a trine, and the book’s big-hearted good time. They laugh loudly, spend freely and go on adventures with no parking plan. Each thinks the other is a magnificent idea. Sagittarius’s honesty can puncture Leo’s dignity. Both are better at the party than at the morning after. Someone needs to know where the keys are, and it won’t be either of them.
In love. A joyful, generous love with a lot of laughing in public. You’ll spoil each other and go on adventures. Sagittarius should take care with a blunt joke, and Leo should remember that it isn’t always about Leo.
As friends. You’re the friends who turn a Tuesday into a story. You’ll book it now and work out the money afterwards. You’ve been told to keep it down in at least three countries.
Ask each other: What’s the biggest, silliest thing you’d do if nobody could stop you?
Leo and Capricorn compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Campfire.
One wants the applause, the other wants the receipts. An awkward match, but both are ambitious and both like the good things in life. Leo opens the door and Capricorn owns the building. As a pair they can look, and be, extremely successful. One wants the applause, the other wants the receipts. Leo finds Capricorn cold, and Capricorn finds Leo expensive. Both want respect, and each wants it the way they’d give it.
In love. An ambitious love, with a very nice house at the end of it. Leo wants to be cherished and Capricorn shows it with planning. Put the feeling into words, and put the phone down at dinner.
As friends. Capricorn is Leo’s most honest adviser, and Leo is why Capricorn ever goes anywhere nice. You respect what the other’s built. You’ll compare notes, drink something expensive and never admit to being impressed.
Ask each other: Whose idea of a good life costs more, and does it matter?
Leo and Aquarius compatibility
A pull of opposites, by tradition: Wind on a flame.
Opposites: one loves the crowd, one loves the cause. Opposites, both fixed, and tradition’s classic pull between the one and the many. Leo loves being special, Aquarius loves everybody equally. Each is fascinated by what the other can’t do, and both are loyal when it counts. Leo asks “but do you love me?” and Aquarius talks about love in general. One wants warmth and the other wants space. Neither will budge, and each is sure they’re the reasonable one.
In love. The classic pull between “look at me” and “look at everyone”. It’s lively, and full of debate about what love even is. Leo needs to feel chosen, and Aquarius needs to feel free. You can give each other both.
As friends. You’ll argue about everything and you’ll never be bored. Leo draws the crowd and Aquarius tells it what to do next. Each gets something from the other that they wouldn’t admit to needing.
Ask each other: Do you want to be someone’s favorite, or part of something bigger?
Leo and Pisces compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Steam.
One shines, the other writes poems about the shine. An awkward pairing with a soft center. Leo shines and Pisces writes poems about it. Pisces gets looked after, Leo gets adored, and for a while everyone’s delighted with the arrangement. Leo wants a straight answer and Pisces is unsure of the question. One’s bluster can flatten the other without noticing. Pisces may vanish rather than say it, and Leo hates an empty seat.
In love. A storybook love, in the early chapters. Leo’s the hero and Pisces is the poet. It stays lovely if Leo listens as well as performs, and Pisces is willing to come out and say what’s wrong.
As friends. Leo cheers Pisces up, and Pisces tells Leo the truth, so softly it doesn’t sting. You’re one of the gentler friendships Leo will ever have, and Pisces is one of the few who gets backstage.
Ask each other: What makes you feel properly seen by the other?
Virgo compatibility
Best with Capricorn, worst with SagittariusAug 23 to Sep 22. Earth sign, mutable mode. Has already fixed it, quietly, and made a list.
What Virgo wants in a partner
Tradition’s Virgo wants someone worth improving things for. The book says it loves by noticing: the appointment remembered, the shelf fixed, the small thing done before you asked. It needs a partner who’s reliable, sees that work for what it is, and can say thank you in full sentences.
Where Virgo wears people out
Where it wears people out is the running audit. Virgo is said to spot what’s wrong before it sees what’s right, to worry on everybody’s behalf and to find it hard to relax in a room with a crooked picture. A partner can start to feel like a project.
Virgo’s best and worst matches
The table sends Virgo to Taurus and Capricorn, who share the respect for doing things right, then to Cancer and Scorpio for depth. Its squares are Gemini and Sagittarius, who think the details will work themselves out.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Capricorn: easiest
- Taurus: easiest
- Scorpio: easy
- Cancer: easy
- Virgo: same sign
- Pisces: pull of opposites
- Libra: neutral
- Leo: neutral
- Aquarius: awkward
- Aries: awkward
- Sagittarius: hardest
- Gemini: hardest
Virgo and Virgo compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: Two gardeners.
The towels are folded. The towels are being refolded. Same sign, same standards. Everything’s clean, everything’s on time, and at last someone understands why that matters. Tradition says they’ll show love through small, accurate acts of service. Two inner critics and only one kitchen. The towels get refolded, the worries get compared, and nobody ever says “that’ll do”. Both are harder on themselves than on anyone, and it spreads.
In love. You’ll love each other by doing things properly. Few people will ever be as well looked after. Now say it out loud, and let something be slightly wrong for an entire evening. It won’t kill either of you.
As friends. The friend you can honestly complain to about how someone stacks a dishwasher. You’ve both got a system, and you respect each other’s. You’d proofread each other’s wedding speech, and you’d both want that.
Ask each other: What would you do with one completely unproductive day?
Virgo and Libra compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Kite and string.
One fixes the problem, the other fixes how it looks. Neighbors who both care how things are done. Virgo fixes the problem and Libra fixes how it looks. They’re considerate, tidy and good at a compromise, which is not a small thing. Virgo says the true thing and Libra wishes they hadn’t. One can’t let a flaw go, and the other can’t bear a scene. A long polite disagreement can happen entirely through loading the dishwasher.
In love. A courteous, considerate love, with very little shouting. Libra brings beauty and Virgo brings order. Don’t let good manners get in the way: tell each other what you actually think, and then do the dishes.
As friends. You give each other wonderfully tactful advice about each other’s partners. Libra softens Virgo’s verdicts before they reach anyone. You’ve been planning that one trip for six years, and you’ve got a great spreadsheet.
Ask each other: What do you each do when something isn’t quite right?
Virgo and Scorpio compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: A good garden.
Two people noticing everything, and one dry remark a week. Earth and water, a sextile, and two people who notice everything. They trust slowly, keep their word and share a dry remark about once a week. Tradition says it’s quietly one of the most solid matches. Both keep files. Virgo’s worry meets Scorpio’s suspicion, and nobody says what they’ve spotted. A small thing can be analysed for days without ever being mentioned.
In love. A slow-burning, private love between two people who pay attention. You’ll trust each other with more than anyone else knows. Don’t turn every small thing into an investigation. Some socks are just socks.
As friends. You see through everyone, and you tell each other, in a low voice, at parties. This is a very dry, very loyal friendship. Nobody knows what you’re laughing at, and that’s how you like it.
Ask each other: What did you notice about the other in the first week?
Virgo and Sagittarius compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Campfire.
One checked the tires, the other sold the car. A square of two mutable signs, one with a checklist and one with a passport. Sagittarius gets Virgo out of the house, and Virgo makes sure the visa’s valid. Both are learners at heart. One checked the tires, the other sold the car. Virgo’s details feel like a lead weight to Sagittarius. Sagittarius’s “it’ll be fine” feels like an unpaid bill to Virgo.
In love. An odd love between a planner and a leaper. Sagittarius opens up the map, and Virgo checks the tickets. There’s real learning in it, if neither tries to turn the other into a slightly improved version of themselves.
As friends. Virgo keeps the emergency numbers and Sagittarius is the emergency. You’ve had some deep late-night talks about what it all means, then had a row about who left the passport in the car.
Ask each other: What’s the worst thing that happened because nobody checked?
Virgo and Capricorn compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: Two gardeners.
Everything is on time. Everything has a folder. Earth with earth, a trine, and the book’s most reliable arrangement. Everything’s on time and everything has a folder. Both show love by turning up, doing it properly and not making a fuss. It can be all admin. Neither is quick to stop, or to say something soft. The relationship may run perfectly and be slightly short of fun, so someone should book something silly.
In love. A thoroughly grown-up love, with a joint savings plan and a shared sense of humor nobody else has noticed. It’s steady and it’ll last. Do something daft together, on purpose, and put it in the calendar.
As friends. The friends who’ll help with your tax return and your divorce. You don’t see each other as often as you’d like, because you’re both working. When you do, it’s as if nothing has changed.
Ask each other: When did you last do something with no point at all?
Virgo and Aquarius compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Kite and string.
One tidies the data, the other wants to change the world. An awkward pair with a shared love of a better system. Virgo tidies the data and Aquarius wants to change the world with it. They’re both a bit outside the crowd, and both like an odd idea. One’s thinking about the trash and the other’s thinking about humanity. Neither is quick to show feelings, so they can both assume all’s well. Virgo’s practical advice may meet an unmoved Aquarius.
In love. A cerebral love, with more shared reading than shared candles. You’re both happiest when solving something. Be careful of being polite strangers: ask how the other is, and wait for an answer that isn’t about a project.
As friends. A friendship of odd hobbies and strong opinions. Virgo fact-checks the conspiracy and Aquarius rewrites it. You’ll both turn up to fix something for a neighbor, and you’ll both be insufferable about the method.
Ask each other: What’s the small thing you’d change about the world, starting tomorrow?
Virgo and Pisces compatibility
A pull of opposites, by tradition: A good garden.
Opposites: the list and the daydream, on the same fridge. Opposites on the wheel, both mutable, and tradition’s pair of the list and the daydream. Virgo makes life work, and Pisces makes it feel like something. Each gently forgives what the other can’t do. Virgo corrects and Pisces floats away. Order and mess share the same fridge, and neither is winning. Pisces may feel judged, and Virgo may feel it’s all on them.
In love. A tender love across the widest gap. Virgo tidies up the mess and Pisces gives it meaning. You’ll need patience, since one lives by the list and the other by the tide. It can be very beautiful.
As friends. Virgo gets Pisces to the appointment, and Pisces gets Virgo to admit how they feel. You’re each other’s useful opposite. It’s one of those friendships that seems unlikely, until you’re in trouble.
Ask each other: What would fall apart first if the other left for a week?
Libra compatibility
Best with Aquarius, worst with CapricornSep 23 to Oct 22. Air sign, cardinal mode. Can see both sides of the menu, and that’s the problem.
What Libra wants in a partner
Tradition’s Libra wants a partner, full stop. The book calls it the sign of partnership, and says it’s at its best in a pair: charming, fair and thoughtful about how things look and feel. What it needs is kindness, good manners and someone who’s glad to talk it through.
Where Libra wears people out
The book’s complaint is the decision that never arrives. Libra is said to weigh every option until the restaurant closes, to agree in the moment and resent it later, and to avoid a fight long after a fight would have helped. A direct partner may feel they’re arguing with fog.
Libra’s best and worst matches
The table pairs Libra with Gemini and Aquarius, fellow air signs, then with Leo and Sagittarius for warmth and fun. Its squares are Cancer and Capricorn, who both want Libra to pick a side.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Aquarius: easiest
- Gemini: easiest
- Sagittarius: easy
- Leo: easy
- Libra: same sign
- Aries: pull of opposites
- Scorpio: neutral
- Virgo: neutral
- Pisces: awkward
- Taurus: awkward
- Capricorn: hardest
- Cancer: hardest
Libra and Libra compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: All talk.
After you. No, after you. The restaurant has closed. Same sign, same manners. Two people who hate a scene, love a nice room and always ask what you’d prefer. It’s civilized, charming and usually very well lit. After you. No, after you. The restaurant has closed. Nobody says what they want, so nothing happens, and a real grievance can stay beautifully wrapped for years.
In love. A gorgeous, considerate love, conducted almost entirely in “no, you choose”. You’ll rarely fight, and you’ll always look nice. Practise disagreeing while it’s easy, so you’ve had some rehearsal for when it’s hard.
As friends. You could spend a whole vacation deciding which beach. You know how to make every guest feel welcome, and you do it as a team. Nobody has ever heard either of you say what you really think of the host.
Ask each other: What do you really want for dinner? No, really.
Libra and Scorpio compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Weather.
One keeps the peace, the other keeps the file. Neighbors with a real fascination. Libra brings grace to Scorpio’s intensity, and Scorpio brings depth to Libra’s surface. Each sees through the other’s act, and quite likes it. Libra keeps the peace, Scorpio keeps the file. One smooths over what the other needs to have out. Charm can read as dishonesty, and silence as a verdict.
In love. Charm meets intensity. Libra gets taken seriously, and Scorpio gets taken somewhere nice. It’s a heady love, as long as Scorpio doesn’t read politeness as a lie, and Libra doesn’t treat honesty as bad manners.
As friends. Libra knows what everyone’s saying and Scorpio knows what they mean. Together you’d make an excellent diplomatic service. You’re both excellent at parties, and you’ll compare notes all the way home.
Ask each other: What’s something you’ve smoothed over that you’d still like to discuss?
Libra and Sagittarius compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: Wind on a flame.
Charm, a passport, and nobody looking at the time. Air on fire, a sextile, and a very good time. Libra has the charm and Sagittarius has the passport. They’re both sociable, curious and easy company, and they hate being pinned down in the same way. Sagittarius blurts what Libra spent all evening avoiding. Neither is keen on the admin of real life. A bad decision can go unchallenged for a long time because everyone’s having fun.
In love. A light-hearted, friendly love that likes being out of the house. It’s easy to be happy together. It stays good if Libra says when something hurts, and if Sagittarius is around to hear about it.
As friends. You’re everybody’s favorite plus-one. Sagittarius brings the wild idea and Libra gets it past the bouncer. You’ll get on with anyone, anywhere, and you’ll leave with their number and an invitation to Portugal.
Ask each other: What’s the most fun you’ve had that you shouldn’t have?
Libra and Capricorn compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Kite and string.
Both want to be in charge, very politely. A square of two cardinal signs: both want to run things, very politely. Together they look excellent and get a lot done. Libra handles the people and Capricorn handles the numbers. Who’s in charge is a question neither will ask out loud. Libra wants time together, and Capricorn wants to finish something first. A tense, courteous stalemate can pass for a marriage for quite a while.
In love. A polished, ambitious love, slightly formal at first. You’re both very good at this and you know it. Put the diaries down and let the other see you tired. That’s where it gets real.
As friends. You’re each other’s reference. Libra smooths Capricorn’s emails and Capricorn checks Libra’s contract. It’s a useful friendship, and over the years it has turned out to be a fond one, to both your surprise.
Ask each other: Who actually makes the big decisions, and how?
Libra and Aquarius compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: All talk.
Long talks about what’s fair, while the dishes waits. Air with air, a trine, and long, happy talks about what’s fair. Both believe in people and in a good argument well made. They’re friends first, and tradition counts that as their great strength. The dishes waits while you fix society. Both can dodge a feeling by discussing the principle. Libra needs more closeness than Aquarius remembers to give.
In love. A love of equals, with plenty of talk and plenty of freedom. You’re the couple who asks the waiter how he is. Just notice when it’s time to stop discussing love and go and do some.
As friends. You’re each other’s favorite person to argue with. You care about the same things and you’ve joined the same committees. Your friends find you exhausting, and you’ve held a fair and open discussion about that.
Ask each other: What’s a topic you could happily argue about all night?
Libra and Pisces compatibility
An awkward match, by tradition: Weather.
Both want everyone happy. Nobody picks the movie. An awkward match with a real sweetness. Both want everyone happy, and both have a soft spot for romance and pretty things. A gentle evening with these two is a very gentle evening. Nobody picks the movie. Both avoid, both drift, and a hard decision will wait a long time for a volunteer. Reality may need to knock more than once.
In love. A dreamy, gentle love, with the lights low. You both want it to be perfect, and you’re both reluctant to say it isn’t. Be brave with small truths, and it can stay as lovely as it looks.
As friends. You’ll cry at the same movie and text about it afterwards. It’s a very forgiving friendship. Neither of you has ever told the other that outfit was a mistake, and perhaps someone should.
Ask each other: Which of you finally makes the phone call nobody wants to make?
Scorpio compatibility
Best with Pisces, worst with AquariusOct 23 to Nov 21. Water sign, fixed mode. Knows. Isn’t saying what.
What Scorpio wants in a partner
Tradition’s Scorpio wants all of it or none of it. The book’s Scorpio is private, intense and loyal past the point of reason, and it needs a partner who can be trusted with a secret, won’t flinch at a hard conversation and doesn’t play games it can’t win.
Where Scorpio wears people out
Where it wears people out is the watching. Scorpio is said to test people quietly, to keep score for years and to treat a small betrayal as a large one. Light-hearted partners can feel investigated, and they may never be told what they’re suspected of.
Scorpio’s best and worst matches
The table sends Scorpio to Cancer and Pisces, the other water signs, then to Virgo and Capricorn for their discretion. Its squares are Leo and Aquarius, two more fixed signs, neither one known for backing down.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Pisces: easiest
- Cancer: easiest
- Capricorn: easy
- Virgo: easy
- Scorpio: same sign
- Taurus: pull of opposites
- Sagittarius: neutral
- Libra: neutral
- Aries: awkward
- Gemini: awkward
- Aquarius: hardest
- Leo: hardest
Scorpio and Scorpio compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: The deep end.
Two locked doors who fell for each other’s locks. Same sign, same locked door. Nobody could understand you better, and nobody else would want to. It’s all-or-nothing, it’s private, and tradition calls it intense even by Scorpio’s standards. Two detectives investigating each other. Trust is everything, and a small doubt grows in the dark. Neither forgives easily, and both are very good at waiting.
In love. Total, private and not for the faint-hearted. You’ll know each other better than anyone ever will. Decide early that you’re on the same side, because neither of you is any good at losing.
As friends. You don’t have many friends and you need only this one. You’d never discuss the other’s business, and you’d know if they did. Between you, you have enough on everyone to retire.
Ask each other: What would it take for you to tell the other everything?
Scorpio and Sagittarius compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Steam.
One keeps every secret, the other just told the taxi driver. Neighbors, and they learn from each other. Sagittarius brings light and laughter into a dark room, and Scorpio shows there’s more to life than a good story. Each one finds the other a bit of an education. One keeps every secret, the other just told the taxi driver. Scorpio wants depth and Sagittarius wants the door open. A joke made in public can cost weeks at home.
In love. Fascination across a real difference. Sagittarius brings air and Scorpio brings gravity, and each is a bit addicted. Sagittarius must learn what’s private, and Scorpio has to accept that freedom isn’t the same as leaving.
As friends. Scorpio’s the only one who can make Sagittarius go quiet, and Sagittarius is the only one who can make Scorpio laugh out loud. You’ve had some truly strange conversations in some truly strange bars.
Ask each other: What’s off limits to tell your friends, and do you both agree?
Scorpio and Capricorn compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: A good garden.
Few words. Long game. Don’t cross either. Water and earth, a sextile, and few words, long game. Both are ambitious, private and very hard to cross. They trust slowly and then completely, and they’re formidable once they’re on one side. Two closed books on one shelf. Neither says what’s wrong, and both think that’s strength. Control is a shared hobby, and it can turn into a quiet contest.
In love. A serious, slow, very loyal love. You both know what you want and you both mean it. It can feel like a merger, in a good way. Let a little softness out where only the other can see it.
As friends. A small friendship with very high walls. You’ve helped each other through things nobody else knows about. Between you, you could quietly run most organizations, and at least one of you already does.
Ask each other: When did you last let the other see you struggling?
Scorpio and Aquarius compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Weather.
Neither will move. Both think they’re the calm one. A square of two fixed signs, each convinced they’re the calm one. Both are unusual, both are stubborn and both are intrigued. Real respect is possible, usually after a very long argument. Scorpio wants all of you, and Aquarius wants some room. One runs hot and private, the other cool and public. Neither will move, and neither will say so.
In love. Two stubborn people, each fascinated, neither giving way. It’s rarely dull. Scorpio wants depth and Aquarius wants distance, so agree on where the line is, and don’t use silence or logic to win.
As friends. A friendship of very long late-night arguments. You’re both outsiders in your own way, and you’ve both noticed. Each has changed the other’s mind exactly once, and neither of you will ever admit to it.
Ask each other: How close is too close, for each of you?
Scorpio and Pisces compatibility
The easiest match, by tradition: The deep end.
Deep water, no lifeguard, and both of you swim fine. Water with water, a trine, and deep water with no lifeguard. They read each other without trying, and they’ll forgive much. Tradition counts it among the most devoted matches on the wheel. Things stay unsaid. Pisces drifts, Scorpio suspects, and a mood can fill the whole house. They’d both benefit from a friend who occasionally opens a window.
In love. A deep and rather psychic love. You’ll feel understood in a way you can’t explain to anyone. Stay in touch with daylight, and with your friends, and it can be the gentlest intensity going.
As friends. The friend who knows what’s wrong before you’ve sat down. You trade secrets and silences and very dark jokes. Nobody’s ever seen either of you cry except each other, and that’s how it’ll stay.
Ask each other: What do you understand about the other that you’ve never had to say?
Sagittarius compatibility
Best with Aries, worst with PiscesNov 22 to Dec 21. Fire sign, mutable mode. Is booking a flight during this sentence.
What Sagittarius wants in a partner
Tradition’s Sagittarius wants a partner who’s also a friend and, ideally, a travel companion. The book’s archer is honest, funny and always leaving for somewhere, and it needs someone with their own life who’ll say yes to an adventure without asking when they’ll be back.
Where Sagittarius wears people out
The trouble is the honesty and the exit. Sagittarius is said to tell the truth a little too loudly, to get restless at the first sign of routine and to treat commitment as a very long layover. Partners who want a settled calendar can feel like a stop on the tour.
Sagittarius’s best and worst matches
The table likes Aries and Leo best, the other fire signs, then Libra and Aquarius for the good conversation. Its squares are Virgo and Pisces: one wants a checklist, the other wants a promise.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Aries: easiest
- Leo: easiest
- Aquarius: easy
- Libra: easy
- Sagittarius: same sign
- Gemini: pull of opposites
- Capricorn: neutral
- Scorpio: neutral
- Taurus: awkward
- Cancer: awkward
- Pisces: hardest
- Virgo: hardest
Sagittarius and Sagittarius compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: Two bonfires.
No fixed address, no regrets, one shared phone charger. Same sign, one shared phone charger. Nobody’s jealous of the trip, and nobody minds the mess. Tradition sees a long laugh with no fixed address, and two people who always have somewhere to be. Nobody’s watching the money, the calendar or the milk. Honesty lands hard and nobody’s home to pick up the pieces. Sooner or later someone has to stay in for the boiler man.
In love. Love with the windows down. It’s funny, honest and allergic to routine. You’ll both want to go. Make sure you’re going to the same place, and once in a while unpack before you leave again.
As friends. Friends who haven’t been in the same time zone for years, and still pick up mid-joke. You’ve shared a bunk, a blister and a very bad idea involving a boat. You’re already planning the next one.
Ask each other: Which of you would actually stay in for the boiler man?
Sagittarius and Capricorn compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Campfire.
One climbs the mountain for the view, one for the deeds. Neighbors climbing the same mountain for different reasons. One goes for the view, one for the deeds. Sagittarius loosens Capricorn’s tie, and Capricorn gets Sagittarius a pension. One calls it freedom and the other calls it being irresponsible. Capricorn’s five-year plan and Sagittarius’s plan for Friday don’t share a calendar. A joke about work won’t be funny.
In love. Odd, and it can last. Capricorn makes the big dream real, and Sagittarius reminds Capricorn why you’d want it. Agree on some money rules early, then leave some room in the plan for a surprise.
As friends. Capricorn’s the friend who says “this is a terrible idea” and comes anyway. Sagittarius is why Capricorn has any stories at all. You’ve kept each other honest, each in your own way.
Ask each other: If you won a free year, how would each of you spend it?
Sagittarius and Aquarius compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: Wind on a flame.
Let’s start a commune. Sorry, which country is this? Fire and air, a sextile, and the book’s friendliest rebels. Both want freedom, a wide circle and a better world, ideally with a good view. Neither will ever ask where you’ve been. Neither is around. It’s hard to get either of you to settle a date, a bill or a feeling. It can stay a brilliant friendship that nobody thought to look after.
In love. A free, friendly, future-minded love. Nobody’s clingy and everybody’s curious. It’s best when you’re both heading somewhere. It could use a little more of the sitting-down part, where you ask how the other really is.
As friends. The friends who met at a festival and left on a road trip. You’ve got big ideas and no fixed address, and you’ll always take each other’s call, from any continent, at any hour.
Ask each other: What would your commune’s one rule be?
Sagittarius and Pisces compatibility
The hardest match, by tradition: Steam.
One’s over the horizon, the other’s in the clouds. Both wave. A square of two mutable signs, both dreamers with different horizons. One’s out in the world, the other’s somewhere inside, and both believe something wonderful is coming. There’s real kindness here. Nobody’s landing the plane. Sagittarius’s blunt truth can hurt, and Pisces may disappear to deal with it. Both will overpromise with complete sincerity.
In love. Two idealists falling in love with what could be. It’s warm, funny and hopeful. It needs one of you to read the small print, and it’s worth knowing now that neither of you wants to.
As friends. You’ll end up at the same silent weekend, for different reasons. Pisces gets Sagittarius to slow down for an evening, and Sagittarius gets Pisces back out of the house. You’re both terrible at replying to messages.
Ask each other: What have you each promised with total sincerity and not done?
Capricorn compatibility
Best with Taurus, worst with AriesDec 22 to Jan 19. Earth sign, cardinal mode. Has a five-year plan for the weekend.
What Capricorn wants in a partner
Tradition’s Capricorn wants someone to build with. The book’s goat is patient, dry and ambitious, and it takes love as seriously as work. It needs a partner who keeps their word, respects the long game and can coax out the funny side it keeps for people it trusts.
Where Capricorn wears people out
Where it wears people out is the schedule. Capricorn is said to put work first, to keep its feelings in a locked filing cabinet and to confuse providing for someone with being close to them. Warmer partners may wonder if there’s a meeting they could book.
Capricorn’s best and worst matches
The table sends Capricorn to Taurus and Virgo, who share the work ethic, then to Scorpio and Pisces for tenderness under the suit. Its squares are Aries and Libra, both cardinal signs who’d also like to be in charge.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Taurus: easiest
- Virgo: easiest
- Pisces: easy
- Scorpio: easy
- Capricorn: same sign
- Cancer: pull of opposites
- Aquarius: neutral
- Sagittarius: neutral
- Gemini: awkward
- Leo: awkward
- Aries: hardest
- Libra: hardest
Capricorn and Capricorn compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: Two gardeners.
Two calendars, perfectly aligned, one joke per quarter. Same sign, two calendars perfectly aligned. Both respect hard work, a long plan and doing what you said you’d do. Tradition sees a very impressive partnership, and about one joke a quarter. Everything’s scheduled except each other. Work can win every argument about time, and neither wants to admit they’re tired. The joy needs to go in the calendar, in pen.
In love. A love that comes with a five-year plan and, in a good way, a pension. Respect comes first and tenderness creeps up on you. Remember to leave the office, both of you, at the same time.
As friends. You rarely meet, and when you do, you compare notes on how to run everything. You’re each other’s proof that someone else takes this seriously. There’s one joke. You’ve both been enjoying it since 2009.
Ask each other: What’s in your calendar this month purely for fun?
Capricorn and Aquarius compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Kite and string.
One runs the company, the other wants to abolish it. Neighbors, with an odd, productive tension. One runs the company, the other wants to abolish it. Saturn rules both in the old books, so they share more backbone than you’d think. Rules versus rule-breaking, at breakfast. Capricorn wants results and Aquarius wants a new way of doing it. Each can seem a bit cold to the other, which is ironic.
In love. Old rules meet new ones. It’s a thoughtful love with a slightly dry surface. Each gives the other a reason to rethink things. Remember that being right isn’t the same as being close.
As friends. You’ve been arguing about how the world should work for years, and neither of you would miss it. Capricorn knows how things run, Aquarius knows why they shouldn’t. Dinner goes on till late.
Ask each other: What’s a tradition you’d keep, and one you’d scrap?
Capricorn and Pisces compatibility
An easy match, by tradition: A good garden.
One builds the boat, the other knows where the fish are. Earth and water, a sextile, and a kinder match than it looks. Capricorn builds the boat, Pisces knows where the fish are. Each one softens or steadies the other in the right place. Capricorn wants to know the plan, and Pisces hasn’t got one. One may start to parent the other. Unspoken disappointment is the hazard, so it needs saying.
In love. A tender match between a mountain and the sea. Capricorn gives shelter, and Pisces gives feeling. It works when Capricorn lets the soft stuff in, and when Pisces says what’s needed instead of hoping it’ll be guessed.
As friends. Pisces is the only one who can tell when Capricorn’s not all right. Capricorn is the one who sorts out Pisces’s paperwork. You’d never have met if you hadn’t needed each other, and you did.
Ask each other: What do you each rely on the other for without ever saying so?
Aquarius compatibility
Best with Gemini, worst with TaurusJan 20 to Feb 18. Air sign, fixed mode. Loves humanity. People, less so.
What Aquarius wants in a partner
Tradition’s Aquarius wants a mind it can’t predict. The book’s water bearer is friendly, odd and independent, and it needs a partner who’s a friend first, gives it plenty of room and doesn’t take a long silence or a strange new theory as a bad sign.
Where Aquarius wears people out
The book’s complaint is distance. Aquarius is said to love humanity more easily than the person across the table, to step back when things get emotional, and to stick to a principle well past the point of comfort. Partners who need closeness may feel studied.
Aquarius’s best and worst matches
The table pairs Aquarius with Gemini and Libra, the other air signs, then with Aries and Sagittarius for the energy. Its squares are Taurus and Scorpio, two fixed signs every bit as hard to move.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Gemini: easiest
- Libra: easiest
- Aries: easy
- Sagittarius: easy
- Aquarius: same sign
- Leo: pull of opposites
- Pisces: neutral
- Capricorn: neutral
- Cancer: awkward
- Virgo: awkward
- Taurus: hardest
- Scorpio: hardest
Aquarius and Aquarius compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: All talk.
Two aliens agree that people are strange. Same sign, two aliens agreeing that people are strange. Plenty of space, plenty of friends, and no need to explain the odd hobby. It’s a very modern arrangement, and it suits them. Who’s actually in the room? Both are comfortable at arm’s length, so it’s possible to be very happy and not very close. Someone’s going to have to say the soft thing.
In love. Love as a long, odd conversation between two people who don’t want to be owned. There’s lots of freedom and lots of respect. Remember the other person likes to be needed too, even if they’d deny it.
As friends. You’ll be friends forever, in the sense that you’ll see each other every three years and pick up exactly where you left off. You’ve both got the same odd theory, and only you two like it.
Ask each other: When did you last say something soppy without a joke after it?
Aquarius and Pisces compatibility
A neutral match, by tradition: Weather.
One loves everyone in theory, the other in tears. Neighbors who both love everyone: one in theory, the other in tears. They share a soft spot for outsiders and lost causes. Together they’re kind, unusual and a bit hard to find. Aquarius thinks, Pisces feels, and they don’t always meet. One withdraws to the head, the other to the bath. Daily life is nobody’s department.
In love. A kind, slightly otherworldly love. You both care about everybody, and you both forget to look after yourselves. It lasts when the theory comes down to earth, and when the feeling gets said in plain words.
As friends. The friendship with the longest, strangest voice notes. You’ve both taken in strays, of various kinds. Aquarius offers the theory and Pisces offers the tissues, and between you, it’s all very nearly handled.
Ask each other: Whose problem is the washing machine, and why is it still broken?
Pisces compatibility
Best with Cancer, worst with GeminiFeb 19 to Mar 20. Water sign, mutable mode. Cried at a commercial and is fine, thanks.
What Pisces wants in a partner
Tradition’s Pisces wants to be understood without having to explain. The book’s fish is tender, imaginative and quick to pick up a room’s mood, and it needs a partner who’s kind, a bit romantic and willing to stay close on the days nothing makes sense.
Where Pisces wears people out
Where it wears people out is the drift. Pisces is said to dodge hard talks, to absorb other people’s troubles until there’s no room left for its own, and to be somewhere else entirely while nodding. Practical partners can feel like they’re holding on to a balloon.
Pisces’s best and worst matches
The table sends Pisces to Cancer and Scorpio, the other water signs, then to Taurus and Capricorn, who give it something solid to hold. Its squares are Gemini and Sagittarius, who’d both rather be moving on.
Best to worst, by tradition:
- Cancer: easiest
- Scorpio: easiest
- Taurus: easy
- Capricorn: easy
- Pisces: same sign
- Virgo: pull of opposites
- Aries: neutral
- Aquarius: neutral
- Leo: awkward
- Libra: awkward
- Gemini: hardest
- Sagittarius: hardest
Pisces and Pisces compatibility
A mirror match, by tradition: The deep end.
Two fish, one bath, and a movie neither can finish. Same sign, two fish in one bath. They understand each other without a word, and they can spend a whole weekend in a shared daydream. Tradition says it’s the gentlest match on the wheel. Nobody’s steering. Moods echo, escapes multiply, and the mail piles up behind the door. You’ll both need a friend with a clipboard.
In love. A love that’s mostly weather, and mostly lovely. You’ll get each other completely, and you may both forget to do anything about it. Keep one foot on land, and take turns being the one who’s fine.
As friends. You don’t need to say anything. You’ll sit on a beach, or a bathroom floor, and it’s understood. You share a playlist, a hopeless sense of direction and a complete belief in one another.
Ask each other: What’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever done instead of the dishes?
How zodiac sign compatibility works
Tap a sign. From Aries: green is a trine, blue a sextile, red a square, pink an opposition.
Star sign compatibility is one old table read three ways.
Element The twelve signs split into four: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Signs of one element are said to get along, and so are fire with air and earth with water.
Mode Each sign has a mode, which is meant to say how it moves: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs hold on, mutable signs change course.
Distance The steps between two signs on the wheel, called an aspect. Four apart is a trine, the easiest link. Two apart is a sextile, also easy. Three apart is a square, the tense one. Six apart is an opposition: the same mode, straight across the wheel.
The four elements together
Ten ways two elements can meet. Every pair on this page is one of them.
Two bonfiresFire with fire. Huge fun, and nobody is watching the oven. Two gardenersEarth with earth. Solid, steady, and the trash always goes out. All talkAir with air. You will never run out of things to say, or finish a plan. The deep endWater with water. You feel everything, twice, and you bring snacks. Wind on a flameAir with fire. The classic pairing: one has the idea, the other is already doing it. A good gardenEarth with water. The classic pairing: one feels it, the other waters it. CampfireEarth with fire. One lights it, the other keeps it from reaching the tent. WeatherAir with water. One thinks about it, the other feels about it, and it may rain. SteamFire with water. A lot happens very quickly. Open a window. Kite and stringAir with earth. One floats off, the other holds on, and both complain.
Zodiac compatibility in love and friendship
- In love
The old table doesn’t change between love and friendship: it rates two signs, not the relationship. What changes is how you read it. In love, tradition counts an opposition as a spark and a trine as a comfort, and plenty of astrologers will say a bit of friction keeps things interesting.
As friendsIn friendship, the easy trines and sextiles are the ones you can call after two years and pick up mid-sentence.
If you want the sky’s opinion on one or the other, a sun sign is only the start. Astrologers read love from the Moon and Venus as well, and the rising sign for how someone comes across.
Moonsaid to be how you feelVenussaid to be how you loveRisingthe face you show strangersAll of them need a birth time or a full chart, which is why most people, and this page, stop at the sun sign.
Does zodiac compatibility work? What the studies found
The short answer: no study has shown it. Here’s the evidence, for anyone who wants to cite it.

The biggest test of love signs is David Voas’s 2007 paper, Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs. The 2001 census for England and Wales records the birthdays of husbands and wives living together, more than 20 million people. If some pairings really suited each other, those couples should turn up more often than chance alone. They don’t: “there’s no special compatibility between people of particular signs,” he said, and the numbers were “just what we’d predict on the basis of chance.”
It isn’t the only test:
- Carlson, Nature, 1985. In a double-blind test, 28 astrologers matched more than 100 birth charts to personality profiles and did no better than chance. Astrologers still dispute that one.
- Hartmann, Reuter and Nyborg, 2006. Two large samples found no link between date of birth and personality or intelligence.
- Time twins. Roughly 2,000 people born within minutes of each other turned out no more alike than anyone else. The Astrological Association urged caution over that result.

Why this page has no compatibility scores
Plenty of sites give every pair a score out of 100. There’s nothing to calculate it from.
The old table only has seven answers: same sign, neighbors, sextile, square, trine, quincunx and opposite. Any number finer than that was made up by whoever built the page, and two sites will give the same pair two different numbers. So this page gives you the seven plain words, says where they come from, and leaves the scoring to your own two people.
So here’s a game instead
Your sign comes from your birthday. The game checks what you actually do. An element and a mode between them name exactly one sign, so your answers add up to a second sign to set against the first.
Match it and you’re certified. Miss it and you’re a fake: a Cancer who plays like a Virgo, say. Then your match list changes, and you can dare the sign you’re really meant for. If you’d rather have something with no astrology in it at all, the couples test here is two real people answering the same questions, then seeing where they differ.
Questions people ask
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
By tradition, signs of the same element (four signs apart, a trine), then fire with air and earth with water (two apart, a sextile). So Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are said to suit each other, and each of them to suit two of the three air signs. It’s a tradition, not a finding.
Which zodiac signs are least compatible?
Tradition points at squares, signs three apart: Aries and Cancer, Taurus and Leo, Gemini and Virgo, for instance. They share a mode and clash on element. Plenty of happy couples are a square.
What is the best match for each sign?
Tradition has two best matches for every sign, the trines: Aries with Leo and Sagittarius, Taurus with Virgo and Capricorn, Gemini with Libra and Aquarius, Cancer with Scorpio and Pisces. The list above covers all twelve signs.
How do I find my zodiac sign from my birthday?
Use the birthday box in the checker above and it picks the sign for you. The dates on this page are the usual ones, but the Sun’s move from sign to sign can shift by a day from year to year, so if you were born right on a change, sites may disagree.
Is zodiac compatibility accurate?
No study has shown that it is. A check of more than ten million marriages in the 2001 census of England and Wales found no sign of it. Play it for fun.
Why don’t you give a percentage match?
Because there’s nothing to calculate one from. The old table gives seven relations between two signs, and any finer number is invented by the site showing it.
What about Ophiuchus, the 13th sign?
The Sun does pass through the constellation Ophiuchus, but Western astrology’s twelve signs follow the seasons, not the stars behind them, so it isn’t one of the twelve. Your sign hasn’t changed.
Is my sun sign all there is?
In astrology, no. A full birth chart also places the Moon, the rising sign and the planets. This page uses the sun sign alone, which is what most people mean by their star sign.
Do you store what I pick?
Not if you play on your own or on one phone: it’s worked out there and goes nowhere. If you send a link, your first name and answers are kept for 30 days so the other person can compare, or they travel inside the link itself.
