Best friend quiz: make your own

Answer 12 questions about yourself, swap any that aren’t you, write your own last card and send one link. Your friends guess through four doors, from Small talk to Emergency contact, and each one gets a pass showing how far in they got. It’s free, with no app and no account.

How to make your best friend quiz

  1. Tap Make your quiz, write your first name and keep Send a link.
  2. Answer 12 or 20 questions about yourself. Not you? Swap the card. On the last one you can write your own, with a memory only a real friend has.
  3. Send the link to your friends, one by one or in the group chat.
  4. Each friend guesses your answers. Every door opens or slams as they reach it, and they end up with a pass with their name on it.
  5. Save your private link. It shows who got in, how far, and who got there first, on any phone.

The Four Doors

Most best friend quizzes give you a score out of ten and stop there. This one is a way in. We sorted friendship questions by what it takes to know the answer: seeing you once, being in the room, being let in, being there when it went wrong. Each door is a level of the quiz, and a friend has to open one to reach the next.

The rules: slams, the keyhole and the last card

On 12 questions the first two doors take one right answer each and the last two take two. The door is judged the moment its last card is answered. Fail one and it slams. On the first two doors there’s a last chance: the next card is the keyhole. Right, and you pick the lock and carry on. Wrong, and the round ends there. The keyhole works once, and the inner doors have none. The last door also wants the very last card, so Emergency contact takes more than luck.

  • A sample pass, with made-up names. Priya had 5 of 6 on the first two doors, then one right on Spare key, which takes two. It slammed, the inner doors have no keyhole, and that’s where she stopped. Your friends will want this one explained.

How to make a quiz for friends that people finish

Whether you call it a friend quiz, a bestie quiz, a buddy quiz or a buddy meter, the same few things decide whether people finish it. The first question has to be funny, not a favorite color. It has to be short: 12 cards takes a few minutes. And there has to be something to compare at the end, so people send it on.

  • Six rules for a good friend quiz question

    1

Ask what a friend has seen“How does your best friend leave a party?” beats “What’s their favorite color?” One has a story in it.

    2

Make all four answers possibleIf one answer is obviously the nice one, it isn’t a question. It’s a compliment with extra steps.

    3

Make the wrong answers worth arguing about“You thought I’d film it?” is half the game.

    4

Go from outside to insideStart with what anyone could see. End with what only a few people know, so the last door matters.

    5

Leave nobody outNo question should assume a pet, a partner, a job or a family. If the true answer isn’t there, the quiz is wrong, not the person.

    6

Earn one real questionPut it near the end. The funny ones pay for it.

Bestie quiz questions for a birthday or a party

Hosting? Here’s a set that works out loud. Eight cards with their answers, ready to print or read from a phone.

  • The door sheet

For a party, a birthday card or a table with no signal. The birthday person circles an answer in secret, everyone else guesses, and each right guess is a point.

    1. Everyone sings “Happy Birthday” to your best friend. What do they do?Conducts it / Stares at the cake / Films it / Leaves the body
    2. A song your best friend knows comes on in a shop. What happens?Sings, quietly / Sings, not quietly / One finger taps along / Names the year and the album
    3. Your best friend waves back at someone who wasn’t waving at them. Then what?Fixes the hair, smooth / Laughs out loud / Keeps waving, commits / Thinks about it for ten years
    4. It’s your best friend’s birthday. What do they actually want?A big party, everyone / Dinner, four people at most / To be out of the country / No fuss, then hurt there’s no fuss
    5. What would your best friend’s reality show be called?Running Late / Snacks and Secrets / Just One More Episode / I’m Fine, Honestly
    6. Which era of your best friend do we not talk about? The haircut / The band / The ex / The hats
    7. Which story does your best friend tell at every dinner? The trip that went wrong / The terrible boss / The stranger on the train / The school one
    8. Which compliment does your best friend secretly want?“You’re the funny one” / “You always remember” / “You make it look easy” / “You look great”

What each best friend quiz result means

Everyone gets a plain count of right answers and a pass for the door they reached. It’s a joke with a true number inside it, not a measure of your friendship.

    1. Just metDidn’t open the first door.
    2. Small talkKnows your weekend plans, politely.
    3. Group chatIn the chat, but not the other chat.
    4. Spare keyCan be left alone with your plants.
    5. Emergency contactEvery door open. Picks up at 3am.
    6. Knows too muchEvery card right. You may need to move.

Our own framework, drawn by us. It’s a joke with a true shape, not a scientific scale.

How long does it take to become best friends?

Longer than you’d think, which is why the outer doors are the easy ones. In a 2018 study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Jeffrey Hall of the University of Kansas estimated that it takes about 50 hours together to go from acquaintance to casual friend, about 90 to become friends, and more than 200 to become close friends. Hanging out counted for far more than hours spent working side by side.
The anthropologist Robin Dunbar and his colleagues describe a similar shape in their work on social networks: nested layers of about 5, 15, 50 and 150 people, smallest and closest first. Those are averages, and people argue about them. The four doors aren’t a scientific scale either, just a joke with the same shape: plenty of people know your coffee order, and very few know what your “I’m fine” means.

Which friend quiz do you need?

This page is for making a quiz about yourself and sending one link to everyone: the group chat, your whole friend list, up to 50 people. If that’s not what you’re after, here’s where to go.

With one friend in the room you can also play this quiz on one phone: choose On this phone, answer, pass it over, and each door opens or slams as they reach it. On a road trip, read the cards above out loud. One person answers in secret, everyone else guesses, and the loudest wrong answer buys the snacks.

Questions people ask

How do I make a best friend quiz?

Tap Make your quiz, write your first name and answer the questions about yourself. You get one link to send anywhere. There’s nothing to type except your name, and no account to make.

What are good questions for a best friend quiz?

Things a friend has watched you do, with four answers that could all be true. “What does your best friend do with a plan made in the group chat?” works better than a favorite color. Every question in this quiz is on this page, and the six rules we wrote them by are below it.

How many friends can take my quiz?

Up to 50 people can answer one link. Each of them gets their own pass and sees how far everyone else got, and you see everyone’s answers.

What’s a good score?

It depends how far in they get. On 12 questions the first two doors take one right each and the last two take two. On 20 questions that’s two and three. Reaching Emergency contact means all four doors opened and the very last card was right. Getting every card right is a rank of its own.

What happens if a friend fails a door?

It slams, and the round ends there with the pass they’ve earned. On the first two doors there’s one way back, once a round: the next card is the keyhole, and getting it right picks the lock.

Can I choose or write my own questions?

Yes, up to a point. Swap any card that isn’t you, and write your own last card with one true answer and two wrong ones. The rest of the quiz is dealt from all four doors, and a new quiz on the same phone deals cards you haven’t had yet first.

Do my friends need the app or an account?

No. The link opens in a phone’s browser and they only type a first name.

How long does my quiz last, and what’s stored?

Your first name and answers, and those of the friends who reply, are kept for 30 days so everyone can play, then deleted. A friend’s answers are sent door by door as they play, so a door can open on the spot. A card you write yourself travels only in your link. No account and no email address.

How do I see who answered?

When you make your quiz, save your private link. It opens the rack of passes on any phone, with each friend’s door. It also shows your answers, so keep it to yourself. On the phone you made the quiz on, tap Make your quiz and you’ll find it there too.

Is this the same as a buddy meter or a friend quiz?

It’s the same idea, with doors. You answer questions about yourself, send a link, and friends guess. The difference is that the result is how far in they got, not only a score.

Is this a real test of our friendship?

No. It’s a game. Plenty of great friends couldn’t tell you each other’s coffee order, and a low score is a good excuse to spend more time together.
